About the role: The Senior Developer in SSI Schaefer UK provides technical leadership, guidance, coaching and sets the example of what our developers should aspire to. 

You will have great technical depth on all aspects of the development life cycle. You will be a legendary Java Developer (or similar OO language) with many years coding experience.   Ideally you will have worked on large complex logistics projects and understand the intricacies of material flow, warehouse control, warehouse management, picking, storage and retrieval theory and systems optimisations.  You will also be a bit of a whizz with a database; knocking out performant, stable and complex queries.

  • Work as part of or as a lead for a team to understand business requirements and how to translate these into a workable solution which can be coded effectively.  Own creation of work packages and job tasks for the development project team.

  • Be responsible for build and release management when required.

  • Work closely with Project Managers and Release Managers for the coordination of new software releases.

  • Create software solutions based on SSI Schaefer software framework(s).

  • Build Object Oriented solutions based on Java and Oracle back end to deliver warehouse management, warehouse control and material flow solutions.

  • Make use of test-driven development to drive quality from unit test through to automated build & test.

  • Supporting Business Analysts in the creation of technical and user documentation.

  • Positive attitude to problem solving, provide quick solutions when involved in a customer’s incident.

  • Write and update knowledge base articles.

  • Flexible working may be required to cover extended hours dependent upon operational requirements.

  • Be part of the 2nd Level Support Team, provide quick solutions to customer’s incidents.

  • The role may include travel, both nationally and internationally to attend training, customer meetings or as part of the onsite commissioning and deployment requirements.  Provide support to the customer as part of the project delivery before handover to Service & Support.

  • Participation in daily meetings, both internal and external where required.

  • Work as part of international team to ensure maximum system uptime and performance.

  • Actively participate in the mentoring of junior developers.

  • BSc or HND/HNC in Computer Science, IT engineering or equivalent combination of education and 5 years commercial experience in a similar role.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a software development capacity; developing, delivering and supporting commercial software.

  • Experience with Java, C#, C++ or other object-oriented programming languages. (Essential)

  • Experience with Eclipse, or similar IDE

  • Experience of Hibernate, Junit, SQL, JMS and XML

  • Experience with relational databases (Oracle, My SQL, SQL Server).

  • Ability to read, analyse and interpret technical documentation. 

  • Ability to write technical user and procedure manuals. 

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills

  • Interest in logistics and material flow systems

  • Experience of leading small development teams

  • Ability to work in teams and under pressure. 

  • Able to demonstrate their ability to work on their own initiative and without supervision.

  • Open and willing attitude, ready to take on new challenges as they arise.

Salary:  Dependant on experience

Full time role: 37.5 hours per week

Working Hours: Mon-Thur 08:30-16:45 and Fri 08:30-15:30

Working Location: Meadow Barn, Pury Hill Business Park, Pury Rd, Alderton, Towcester NN12 7LS

Holiday: 25 days p.a plus bank holidays
