Growth Mindset: The Mindset That Fuels Lifelong Learning at Work

When was the last time you tried something new and thought, “What if I fail?” Maybe you were stepping into a stretch assignment or presenting to senior leaders for the first time. That little space self-doubt and possibility isn’t just fear. It’s potential.

And at SSI SCHAEFER, we lean into that space, because that’s where growth happens. A growth mindset is the fuel that turns hesitation into action and setbacks into valuable lessons. It’s how we grow people, not just careers.

What Exactly Is a Growth Mindset?

Psychologist Carol Dweck introduced the concept of a growth mindset, the belief that skills, intelligence, and abilities can be developed over time through effort, learning, and support. It stands in sharp contrast to the fixed mindset, which views these traits as innate and unchangeable.

In a world where innovation never sleeps and roles keep shifting, adaptability is the ultimate advantage. Teams that embrace learning aren’t just resilient – they’re unstoppable. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being better than yesterday.

This mindset comes to life in the experiences of our people.

“There’s a learning curve at first but once you push through it, you grow in ways you don’t expect.”

Balaji Govindarao, Project Manager, Logistics Solutions Sales, works closely with customers to understand their warehouse operations and design tailored solutions that improve efficiency and productivity. He often coordinates with multiple teams and stakeholders across different markets, requiring him to balance technical problem-solving with clear communication, often coordinating with multiple teams and stakeholders across different regions.

Recognizing the need to continuously develop his skills, he joined the SSI SCHAEFER Academy’s Professional Customer Communication program and was exposed to global perspectives from trainers and peers across SSI SCHAEFER offices worldwide.

Today, Balaji applies these insights daily, asking better questions, adopting a customer-first mindset, and collaborating more effectively across cultures.

The Vibe Shift: From “I Can’t” to “I’m Growing”

Reality check: no one has a growth mindset all the time and developing one doesn’t mean being perfect or overly optimistic all the time.

Small but powerful shifts in how we think and respond can make a big difference.

“The International Project Management (IPM) program helps me and other stakeholders involved in the project stay aligned on the process, targets, and guidelines. Having a structured approach really helps keep everyone on the same page throughout the project lifecycle.”

Soo Poey Lam, Assistant Manager – Logistics Solutions Project Management, also embodies this growth mindset. “The IPM program offered by the Academy has supported my learning journey by offering a well-defined framework that makes project management more efficient,” he explains.

By applying the IPM framework in real projects, Soo can coordinate more effectively across countries and time zones, ensuring clarity in deliverables and a smoother execution process.

Science of People provides some practical ways to start shifting your vibe from “I can’t” to “I’m growing”:

  1. Pause and Reframe Your Thoughts
When you catch yourself thinking “I can’t do this,” pause and add “yet.” “I can’t do this… yet.” This small change reminds you that ability is a journey, not a fixed state.

  2. Seek Feedback as a Gift
Instead of shying away from feedback, actively ask for it. Use it to understand where you can improve, then map out your next steps. Feedback is a tool for growth.

  3. Embrace Challenges
Volunteer for assignments that stretch your skills, even if they feel uncomfortable. Growth happens when you stretch beyond what you already know.

  4. Learn from Setbacks
When things don’t go as planned, don’t dwell on failure. Instead, ask yourself: “What did I learn? What will I do differently next time?” Viewing setbacks as lessons keeps you moving forward.

  5. Build Consistent Learning Habits
Set aside a dedicated time slot every week to learn something new - whether it’s reading an article, watching a short video, or practicing a new skill. Small habits lead to big growth over time.

As these habits become part of your routine, the old voice of doubt starts to quieten down, making space for a growth mindset that says, “I’m learning, growing, and moving forward.” This vibe shift moves you from hesitation into consistent progress.

Living Our Growth Culture

At SSI SCHAEFER, growth doesn’t stop after onboarding. We’ve woven learning and development into the way we work, grow, and succeed together.

Our Academy plays a central role in our growth culture, offering a broad range of opportunities that support employees at every stage of their careers. It provides pathways to strengthen soft skills, expand technical expertise, and build leadership capabilities that prepare our people for the future.  Every employee has access to learning that is practical, meaningful, and aligned with their career journey.

“The program reminded me that leadership is about influence, not control – empowering team members, building trust through transparency, and aligning everyone around a shared vision.”

For Joyce Lim, Lead Counsel, APAC, the Leadership Program strengthened her self-management and leadership skills. “It helped me prioritize tasks, stay resilient, and manage stress effectively. By focusing on active listening and constructive feedback, I’ve become a more supportive and effective leader.”

Your Growth Journey Starts Here

Growth isn’t one-size-fits-all. For some, growth might mean deepening technical expertise or becoming the go-to problem-solver for complex projects. For others, it could be discovering leadership potential, building the confidence to present in front of a large audience, or learning how to navigate across diverse cultures.

Most importantly, what truly drives growth is your unique vibe. Perhaps yours is relentless curiosity, pushing you to experiment with new tools and ideas. Maybe it’s quiet determination, helping you overcome setbacks with resilience. Or perhaps you are the encourager; the one who cheers others on during tough times. Together, these individual energies fuel our culture of continuous learning.

If you believe growth is a lifelong journey – always learning, always discovering new potential in yourself and those around you – you are already living the growth mindset. That energy doesn’t just propel you forward; it lifts everyone around you, creating a culture where learning and development thrive.

Growth isn’t just a buzzword – it’s our vibe.

At SSI SCHAEFER, continuous learning drives our success and fuels our culture. If you are ready to grow with a team that supports your development, check out the opportunities waiting for you!
