50 Sustainability and Climate Leaders

Partner For Sustainable, Economical & Future-Proof Intralogistics Solutions

SSI SCHAEFER joins the 50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders initiative as the first intralogistics provider to make its contribution to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. #ThinkTomorrow.

With the "50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders" initiative, selected international companies show the will, drive and ability to take effective measures in the fight against climate change. In order to contribute to the achievement of the 17 goals for sustainable development (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals - UNSDG), SSI SCHAEFER promotes sustainable and efficient intralogistics solutions and strengthens the logistics of the company.

Intralogistics is the backbone of almost every sector and the corresponding services and solutions are indispensable for a modern society. Intralogistics enables companies to operate in different sectors of the economy, both locally and in a global environment. A functioning and sustainable supply chain is one of the success factors for most companies, because resources are finite and must be used wisely. In view of the experience and the portfolio of sustainable solutions and innovations, SSI SCHAEFER was invited to participate in this initiative - in line with the company's slogan "Think Tomorrow."

Steffen Bersch, CEO of the SSI SCHAEFER Group: “The initiative that we have joined is based on the goals of sustainable development of the United Nations. We at SSI SCHAEFER are also committed to these goals. As a leading international provider of storage and logistics systems, we have been dealing with sustainable solutions for a long time. We need an economically efficient and sustainable logistics organization to reduce energy consumption, CO2 emissions and costs, while promoting short supply chains and healthy working conditions.”

Sustainable innovation to create a scalable solution for a new local food system with Infarm (Europe)

Sustainable innovation to create a scalable solution for a new, local food system with Infarm (Europe)
According to the UN forecast that by 2030 80% of the population will live in cities, together with the expected population growth, the demand for food production will exceed our most valuable resources. Infarm and SSI SCHAEFER worked together to enable the move from traditional farming to automated "vertical" farming. Vertical farms have become critical to making cities and communities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Compared to traditional arable farming, the innovative solution is up to 400 times more efficient (ie farmers can produce the equivalent of almost 2 hectares of arable land in 25 m²), uses 95% less water, 75% less fertilizer and uses no chemical pesticides.

Resilience to climate change and unpredictable events like the COVID-19 pandemic with ORCA Cold Chain Solutions (Asia)

But food safety and high performance is another area where SSI SCHAEFER makes a difference. Take for example the energy efficient but highly automated logistics solution implemented for ORCA Cold Chain Solutions in the Philippines. This solution faces the challenges of the food industry that up to 37% of the food produced worldwide is lost due to poor packaging, storage and handling. It also enabled the partners to reduce electricity costs by almost 35% and minimize human intervention. In this way, the integrity of all goods can be guaranteed, and accountability as well, as 100% traceability of the goods can be increased (ie with the automation solution from SSI SCHAEFER, up to 4,800 pallets can be moved in a single day).
