On Track for 2030: How SSI SCHAEFER Combines Sustainability and Growth

Neunkirchen/Siegerland, Germany, September 30, 2026 – SSI SCHAEFER has been combining environmental responsibility with forward-looking business development and making measurable progress. Since 2022, the intralogistics provider has reduced their Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 29%. The company remains on track to achieve their climate strategy target of reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to the 2022 baseline. At the same time, solid business performance provides the foundation for developing employees’ skills and for investing in innovative and sustainable technologies and solutions. This positive trajectory is also reflected in the company’s incoming orders, which increased by 8.5% in 2025 compared to the previous year. 

For the global intralogistics specialist with around 8,800 employees in 71 countries, sustainability is a key field of action. It is increasingly becoming a driver of innovation, investment and competitive advantage. “For us, sustainability means making progress in environmental performance, social responsibility and resource efficiency, quantifying that progress and reporting transparently on these achievements,” says Heiko Stötzel, Global Head of Group Social Responsibility & HSE at SSI SCHAEFER. 

Sustainability in products and solutions

This approach is particularly evident in the solutions SSI SCHAEFER develops for their customers. Modern automated logistics centers help companies save energy, optimize transportation and improve supply chain efficiency. One example is the distribution center realized together with Swedish retailer Coop in Eskilstuna, Sweden. The highly automated facility now supplies more than 800 stores and received multiple awards in 2025 for its sustainable and innovative design. The high degree of automation, optimized material flows and supply with renewable energy were key factors in designing the facility for efficient operation. In addition, the consolidation of frozen and fresh-food areas supports a more efficient transportation structure.

SSI SCHAEFER is also placing greater emphasis on resource efficiency in their own products. For their PR 600 pallet racking system, the company developed a new crossbeam profile that reduces material usage by approximately 10% while maintaining the same performance characteristics. In addition, SSI SCHAEFER is evaluating the use of low-carbon steel grades to further reduce resource consumption and emissions along the value chain. 

Sustainability across the organization

At its headquarters in Neunkirchen, Germany, SSI SCHAEFER is currently developing a comprehensive energy and decarbonization concept. Initial modeling indicates that the combined use of photovoltaics, heat pumps, efficient stand-by boilers and a heating network could achieve significant carbon savings while mitigating risks associated with volatile energy costs. 

At the same time, the company is systematically assessing physical climate risks at locations with business-critical processes. Initial analyses conducted in Neunkirchen, Graz (Austria) and Malaysia provide valuable insights into how heat, heavy rain and flooding could affect employees, production processes and critical infrastructure. The findings are being incorporated into targeted measures designed to strengthen the long-term resilience of both sites and supply chains. 

Over the past year, the company continued to invest in occupational health and safety, the training and professional development of their employees and corporate culture. As a result, the number of workplace accidents involving lost time was further reduced. At the same time, employees worldwide completed approximately 13,000 hours of HSE training covering health, safety and environmental protection. 

From Bronze to Silver in the EcoVadis sustainability rating

In recognition of its progress in sustainability management, SSI SCHAEFER was awarded the EcoVadis Silver medal for the first time in 2025, placing the company among the top 15% of evaluated companies worldwide. Following two consecutive years of Bronze status, the Silver medal marks an important milestone in the further development of the company’s sustainability management and confirms that SSI SCHAEFER is on the right track.
