Giebelstadt / Neunkirchen, 14 maart 2024 - Gedurende een periode van drie maanden konden lezers van de tijdschriften Materialfluss en Industrial Production hun stem uitbrengen op de producten van het jaar van de respectievelijke tijdschriften. In totaal streden 31 kandidaten in vijf categorieën voor de Industrial Production Award en 24 kandidaten in vier categorieën voor de Materialfluss Product of the Year Award.

De producten die de top drie haalden in de categorieën van de respectievelijke awards werden op 13 maart 2024 geëerd tijdens een gezamenlijke prijsuitreiking in München. Michael Wegner, hoofd verkoop Midden-Europa van de business unit Products & Equipment bij SSI SCHÄFER, toonde zich verheugd over het succes: "We zijn er erg trots op dat we met twee onderscheidingen zijn geëerd. Met ingang van 11 maart is Peter De Henau benoemd tot Managing Director België en Nederland (BENE).

Peter De Henau is al meer dan 30 jaar actief in de sector van Material Handling en Intralogistiek. Met een ingenieursachtergrond en meer dan 24 jaar ervaring als Managing Director bij integrators voor totaaloplossingen zoals Swisslog (19 jaar) en Savoye (4 jaar), zal Peter De Henau de BeNeLux-organisatie met kantoren in Nederland en België leiden.

Peter zal met zijn solide ervaring en strategische visie, de BENE organisatie vooruit helpen, de prestaties verbeteren en het inherente potentieel maximaliseren. Hij zal werkzaam zijn in de twee kantoren in Leuven (BE) en Oosterhout (NL).

SSI SCHÄFER presenteert nieuwe software speciaal voor stand-alone gebruik van de verticale liftmodule LOGIMAT. LOGIONE is een eenvoudig en intuïtief systeem voor opslaglocaties en artikelbeheer. Digitaal magazijnbeheer biedt grote voordelen op het gebied van transparantie en toegangstijden. Maar wat als de verticale hefmodule niet is aangesloten op een ERP-systeem van een hoger niveau? Vooral klanten die geen complex magazijnbeheer hebben en nodig hebben, profiteren van zeer eenvoudige en snelle opslag- en orderverzamelprocessen met LOGIONE. Dit maakt de software tot een krachtige oplossing.

De SSI LOGIMAT verticale hefmodule is al jarenlang een beproefde oplossing van SSI SCHÄFER voor het opslaan en verzamelen van kleine onderdelen. Naast uitgebreide basisfunctionaliteiten biedt deze een groot aantal extra opties en aanpassingsmogelijkheden om deze aan speciale taken, gebruikers of omstandigheden aan te passen. Met LOGIONE is nu een optie toegevoegd die is afgestemd op de speciale eisen van een stand-alone oplossing.

Alle basisfuncties van de verticale liftmodule worden ondersteund door LOGIONE. Dit omvat zowel eenvoudig zoeken als snelle opslag- en orderverzamelprocessen. Het beheer van artikelen en opslaglocaties wordt vereenvoudigd door een visualisatie van de bijbehorende opslagcompartimenten. Belangrijke functies zoals gebruikersbeheer en het transactielogboek zorgen voor transparantie en helpen processen te optimaliseren. De optionele extra componenten voor meer ergonomie en efficiëntie - LOGIPOINTER, LOGITILT en LOGIWORK - worden ondersteund, net als het gebruik van barcodescanners.

LOGIONE is een innovatieve oplossing en de eerste stap naar digitale transformatie in het magazijn. Het is ontworpen als een eenvoudig en overzichtelijk systeem, is eenvoudig te downloaden en kan zelfstandig worden geïnstalleerd zonder extra hardware. Dankzij gebruiksvriendelijke dialogen en een intuïtieve interface is het gemakkelijk te leren gebruiken - er is geen uitgebreide training nodig.

De software ondersteunt de nieuwste generatie verticale hefmodules (SSI LOGIMAT type SLL) met maximaal twee toegangsopeningen. Verder moet de gestandaardiseerde LOGIDRIVER PLC-interface zijn geïnstalleerd en moet er ten minste één 12" display beschikbaar zijn.

De SSI LOGIMAT is schaalbaar en kan worden aangepast aan veranderende eisen. De verticale liftmodule kan worden aangesloten op een ERP-systeem van een hoger niveau of zelfs rechtstreeks vanuit SAP worden aangestuurd - op voorwaarde dat de overeenkomstige software beschikbaar is. Het is ook mogelijk om extra Vertical Lift Modules te integreren en deze te beheren via de WAMAS Lift & Store intralogistieke software.

Neunkirchen/Siegerland (Germany), March 1, 2024 – The SSI SCHAEFER Group, a German family-owned company established more than 85 years ago and a leading international solution provider for all segments of the intralogistics industry, reported an increase in revenues to EUR 1.87 billion (+3.2%) for the financial year 2023, according to preliminary figures. The Group benefited from major project acceptances in the Logistics Solutions and Customer Services business units, which offset the decline in Products & Equipment revenue.

After a subdued first half, the catch-up effects in the fourth quarter of 2023 were particularly noticeable in the largest business unit, Logistics Solutions, although Group order intake remained below the previous year's level at around EUR 1.65 billion or 4.9%. The main reasons for the gloomy investment climate were the difficult macroeconomic conditions caused by political conflicts and the economic weakness in Europe. On the cost side, the extensive measures taken during the year to improve profitability had a positive impact. On the basis of the preliminary annual financial statements, SSI SCHAEFER was able to achieve a significantly improved annual result at Group level compared to the previous year as well as an almost balanced result before taxes.

SSI Piece Picking is an innovative robotic solution for single piece picking. Tijdens de stemfase, die enkele maanden duurde, stemden ongeveer 20.000 lezers van de vakmedia MM MaschinenMarkt, PROCESS, LABORPRAXIS en DeviceMed op hun favorieten in de 24 verschillende categorieën.

De innovaties en projecten die in elke categorie de top drie haalden, werden geëerd tijdens een grote prijsuitreiking in Würzburg, Duitsland, op 7 december 2023. SSI SCHÄFER levert reserveonderdelen nu nog sneller - alles uit één hand

Met een ultramodern magazijn in Hranice, Tsjechië, heeft SSI SCHÄFER een belangrijke mijlpaal bereikt in zijn onderdelenservice. Christian Puntigam, Hoofd Parts Service Line, en Radek Němec, Teamleider Spare Part Management, Hranice, hebben het project vanaf het eerste idee tot aan de implementatie gevolgd. In dit interview beschrijven ze hoe ze een geheel nieuw niveau van efficiëntie hebben bereikt door het bestaande magazijn te optimaliseren - en waarom, ondanks het grote succes, hun werk nog lang niet klaar is.

Wat is het doel van het nieuwe magazijn in Hranice?

Christian Puntigam: In het magazijn in Hranice worden reserveonderdelen voor het complete SSI SCHÄFER productassortiment opgeslagen en van daaruit naar klanten over de hele wereld verzonden. Op dit moment worden er bijna 7.000 verschillende artikelen verwerkt, van de kleinste pakkingen tot complete montagegroepen, met een voorraad ter waarde van enkele miljoenen euro's.

Radek Němec: In dit magazijn worden niet alleen reserveonderdelen voor producten uit de fabriek in Hranice opgeslagen, maar ook uit andere productielocaties van SSI SCHÄFER. Dat betekent dat een zeer groot percentage van ons assortiment reserveonderdelen nu op één centrale locatie beschikbaar is.

Waarom heeft u gekozen voor één centraal magazijn?

Christian Puntigam: Zo kunnen we onze klanten nog betere leveringsprestaties bieden en onze interne processen nog efficiënter maken. Door voorraad te bundelen kunnen we de tijd tussen ontvangst van een bestelling en levering aan onze klanten aanzienlijk verkorten. Dankzij de nabijheid van de fabriek, de gevestigde processen en de goede strategische ligging was de locatie in Hranice de beste keuze voor ons competence center.

Hoe heeft u het bestaande magazijn in Hranice aangepast voor het nieuwe doel?

Radek Němec:De eerste stap was het ombouwen van hal 12, die tot dan toe werd gebruikt voor tijdelijke opslag. We verdubbelden de capaciteit van het magazijn met palletstellingen en integreerden drie SSI LOGIMAT® verticale liftmodules in de nieuwe lay-out, samen met een kraan voor het verwerken van zware pakketten. In de tweede stap verhuisden we vervolgens alle producten van het magazijn in Giebelstadt, Duitsland, naar Hranice.

Christian Puntigam: We hebben het hele verbouwingsproject in slechts een paar maanden afgerond zonder onderbreking van de werkzaamheden. Dat zou nooit mogelijk zijn geweest zonder de geweldige steun van onze service- en fabrieksteams - ze hebben allemaal hun schouders eronder gezet.

Wat is de procedure voor het bestellen van reserveonderdelen in het nieuwe magazijn?

Radek Němec: Onze klanten kunnen de reserveonderdelen die ze nodig hebben eenvoudig selecteren in de SSI SCHÄFER Web Shop. De bestelling wordt in Hranice verwerkt en direct vanuit het magazijn verzonden of, voor artikelen die zelden worden besteld, via externe partners.

Christian Puntigam: Op die manier krijgen klanten de service voor reserveonderdelen uit één hand. We regelen ook de douane, het transport, de verzending, enz.

Het magazijn is sinds eind 2022 in gebruik - zien jullie nu al de eerste tekenen van succes?

Radek Němec: Absoluut! Vroeger konden we ongeveer 2.800 bestellingen per jaar verwerken, maar dit jaar verwachten we tot 5.500 bestellingen en ongeveer 5.000 artikelen per maand. Dus we hebben in feite onze output verdubbeld, waardoor de waarde van de Hranice-site enorm is toegenomen

Christian Puntigam: Het grootste voordeel is natuurlijk voor onze klanten. Het vernieuwen van de processen heeft het bestellen van reserveonderdelen nog sneller en gemakkelijker gemaakt. 

Is het project nu afgerond? Of hebben jullie nog meer plannen voor de toekomst?

Christian Puntigam: We zijn erg tevreden met de prestaties van het magazijn in Hranice, maar we willen desondanks blijven verbeteren. Naast het overbrengen van een relevante portefeuille reserveonderdelen vanuit Graz in Oostenrijk, wat gepland staat voor 2024, zijn we al bezig met het verder optimaliseren van de materiaalstroom. We voeren een gedetailleerde analyse uit om te bepalen welke paden we kunnen verkorten binnen het orderverzamelen en welke processen we moeten versnellen om onze activiteiten duurzaam, klantgericht en efficiënter te maken. Dat is ons doel.

SSI LOGIMAT - Kleine onderdelen opslaan, alles bijhouden en ruimte besparen

Voor het upgraden van hun logistieke capaciteit en het implementeren van efficiënt logistiek beheer en technologische vernieuwingen heeft het wereldwijde modebedrijf Desigual uit Barcelona opnieuw gekozen voor de expertise van SSI SCHÄFER.

Om de operaties in hun distributiecentrum in Viladecans, Spanje, te stroomlijnen, vervangt Desigual conventionele palletstellingen voor overtollige inventaris door een geavanceerd gebied uitgerust met 24 SSI SCHÄFER RackBots, onderdeel van hun assortiment aan mobiele robotica. In deze initiële fase worden de eerste bestellingen klaargemaakt, die de filialen voorzien van nieuwe seizoenscollecties. Het doel is om dagelijks tot 30.000 items te verwerken in dit innovatieve gebied, werkend in twee shifts.

Een cruciale eis voor dit project is de organisatie van bestellingen op basis van collectie, waarbij alle maten van een model uiteindelijk worden samengevoegd. SSI SCHÄFER ontwikkelde een systeem dat aan deze sorteerbehoeften voldoet, en zorgt voor een gestroomlijnde, direct verkoopklare orderverwerking - essentieel voor Desigual's strategie om de winkelbeleving te verhogen. Dit systeem ondersteunt eveneens het verzamelen van verschillende order types, waaronder herbestellingen van artikelen binnen het seizoen en het verzamelen van online bestellingen.

Samen ontwierpen ze een nieuw geautomatiseerd opslag- en orderverzamelgebied. Hierbij werd de gehele organisatie geanalyseerd om het handmatige en minder efficiënte orderverzamelen terug te dringen ten gunste van een wendbare, ergonomische en innovatieve geautomatiseerde oplossing. Deze nieuwe cold chain-faciliteit, direct verbonden met de productie via een transportsysteem, zal worden uitgerust met SSI Mobile Robot-technologie en zal de productiviteit verhogen in een omgeving tussen 0°C en 2°C.

Voordat de RackBot AMR's worden geïnstalleerd, wordt het huidige opslaggebied ontmanteld en vervangen door PR 600 stellingsystemen van SSI SCHÄFER. De nieuwe opslagruimte zal bestaan uit vijf gangen met stellingen van bijna vijf meter hoog. Hiermee kunnen de producten van Lesage Prestige compacter worden opgeslagen en kan het energieverbruik voor de koeling van de ruimte worden verlaagd.

De geïntegreerde RackBots elimineren de afstanden die operators elke dag afleggen bij het orderverzamelen en verbeteren de goederenstroom. Zodra ze geïnstalleerd zijn, picken ze de bakken op een van de 3.600 locaties en leveren ze ze rechtstreeks af bij de Pick by Light order picking stations. Met vijf RackBots in bedrijf tijdens piekperioden kan de oplossing een prestatie van 340 geleverde en opgeslagen bakken per uur bereiken. Om de leveringspieken van de leveranciers in de ochtend op te vangen, wordt een RackBot Port buffersysteem geïnstalleerd. Dit bufferopslagsysteem van de nieuwste generatie kan tot acht bakken tegelijk leveren of opnieuw inbrengen.

De nieuwe oplossing wordt geïntegreerd in de IT-structuur van Lesage en gekoppeld aan het bestaande ERP-systeem. Het team van SSI SCHÄFER zal het hele proces begeleiden. Deze interface maakt vlootbeheer, voorraadbeheer, batchnummers, traceerbaarheid en realtime visualisatie van stromen mogelijk.

Met een doorlooptijd van minder dan 12 maanden staat de realisatie van deze volledige gerobotiseerde oplossing gepland voor het eerste kwartaal van 2024.

Neunkirchen, Duitsland, 13 oktober 2023 - Met ingang van 15 oktober 2023 is Peter Edelmann benoemd tot nieuwe CEO van het toonaangevende intralogistieke bedrijf SSI SCHÄFER. Peter Edelmann neemt hiermee het stokje over van Steffen Bersch, die het bedrijf de afgelopen drieënhalf jaar heeft geleid.

Peter Edelmann heeft vele jaren managementervaring, waaronder meer dan twintig jaar bij de Voith Group, meest recentelijk als lid van de Raad van Bestuur van de groep. Daarnaast heeft Peter Edelmann als CEO leiding gegeven aan de bedrijven Kaefer Isoliertechnik in Bremen en B&C Industrieholding in Wenen. Daarnaast bekleedt hij verschillende toezichthoudende en adviserende bestuursfuncties.

Olaf Hedden is benoemd tot CFO als lid van de tweehoofdige Raad van Bestuur van de Groep. Hij volgt Bruno Krauss op 15 oktober 2023 op.

Olaf Hedden heeft vele jaren managementervaring. Hij begon zijn carrière bij Metallgesellschaft en werkte later verschillende jaren bij Rheinmetall, zijn meest recente functie was die van CFO van Rheinmetall Automotive AG. The report documents the company's progress in 2022 towards a more sustainable future. Activities focused on implementing measures that were defined in the sustainability strategy developed back in 2021. The sustainability strategy takes equal account of ecological, social and economic aspects.

Despite major challenges such as the effects of the Ukraine war, the SSI SCHAEFER Group was able to achieve important sustainability goals last year. In addition to the development of a group-wide strategy for sustainability management, a strategic environmental, health and safety management (EHS) was introduced, among other things. A-Frame - Volledig geautomatiseerd en foutloos picken voor producten met snelle omloopsnelheid

Leveringskwaliteit en eersteklas dienstverlening op locatie zijn cruciaal als winkelapotheken willen overleven in de online concurrentie. Daarom is de rol van farmaceutische groothandelaren ook belangrijk - zij moeten niet alleen zorgen voor een hoge productbeschikbaarheid, maar ook voor de snelst mogelijke levering. Het bedrijf in dit voorbeeld heeft zijn fulfillmentconcept precies op deze eisen afgestemd en met de modernste techniek van de vaste intralogistieke partner SSI SCHÄFER gerealiseerd. Het nieuwste hoogtepunt is het geïnstalleerde A-Frame met geïntegreerde productcontrole. Direct geïntegreerd, geschikt voor verschillende verpakkingen

Met de implementatie van het A-Frame hebben beide partners hun gezamenlijke betrokkenheid op automatiseringsgebied opnieuw versterkt. Het picking systeem werd rechtstreeks geïntegreerd in de bestaande structuren en heeft sinds de ingebruikname in de tweede helft van 2022 bewezen ideaal te zijn voor het picken van kleine, snel bewegende verpakkingseenheden. Bijvoorbeeld pillen tegen hoofdpijn, neussprays en zelfklevende verbanden. Een belangrijk kenmerk van het A-Frame zijn de productkanalen, die een flexibele configuratie mogelijk maken en zorgen voor een softwaregestuurde, foutloze uitvoer van verschillende verpakkingsformaten, cilindrisch of rechthoekig, in slechts enkele seconden. De artikelen worden uit het A-Frame op de transportband geworpen, waar speciale secties elk aan één order worden toegewezen, en gaan dan direct via het vulpunt naar de orderbakken. Het hele proces duurt slechts 60 seconden.

Automatisch picken met topprestaties voor orderverwerking

De technische prestaties die kunnen worden bereikt - tot 40.000 producten per uur - zijn ook gebaseerd op de oplossingsgerichte ontkoppeling van het picken en bijvullen. Medewerkers vullen de A-frames bij tijdens perioden van lagere belasting. Het systeem pikt dan volledig automatisch, waardoor de verwerking wordt versneld en de zero-defect-strategie kan worden gevolgd. Dit vermindert de werkdruk van het personeel zodat ze ander productief werk in het distributiecentrum kunnen doen, waardoor de middelen optimaal worden benut. Zo zorgt het A-Frame voor een snelle verwerking - zelfs bij complexe opdrachten en tijdens piekbelasting. Als de aanhoudende groei doorzet, maakt het modulaire ontwerp van het systeem optionele uitbreiding en aanpassing aan specifieke nieuwe vereisten mogelijk.

Veiligheid, snelheid en efficiëntie als de belangrijkste factoren voor succes

Verder heeft het A-Frame een compact ontwerp dat ruimte bespaart en een bijzonder hoge opslagdichtheid bereikt op een klein vloeroppervlak. Het A-Frame kan het grootste deel van een productassortiment bevatten, meer dan 120.000 farmaceutische producten. Automatisering levert ook een belangrijke bijdrage aan het voldoen aan de vereisten voor medicijnveiligheid, zoals zero-defect tolerance en volledige traceerbaarheid. Maar snelheid is ook cruciaal. Apotheken hebben vaak onvoldoende opslagruimte om een compleet assortiment producten op te slaan, dus vertrouwen ze op een tijdige levering van de bestelde hoeveelheid farmaceutische producten. De service van de farmaceutische groothandelaar dicht dit gat, maakt een succesvolle klantervaring in de lokale omgeving mogelijk en versterkt de concurrentiepositie van de apotheken, terwijl de proceskosten structureel worden verlaagd.

Het A-Frame van SSI SCHÄFER is een compact orderverzamelsysteem dat ook in bestaande systemen kan worden geïntegreerd en dankzij de hoge productdichtheid een optimale ruimtebenutting realiseert.

Het A-Frame pikt tot 40.000 producten per uur volautomatisch op en werpt deze per order binnen enkele seconden uit op een verzamelband.

Medewerkers vullen het A-Frame bij tijdens perioden met een lagere belasting om het op voorraad te houden voor een hoge doorvoer tijdens piekmomenten.

Swedish Agro Machinery AB, distributor and importer of farming machinery has decided to centralize its spare parts storage system and equip the new warehouse of 3,700 square meters with SSI SCHAEFER’s logistics solutions. Pallet and cantilever racks, shelves and SSI LOGIMAT® Vertical Lift Modules are parts of the solution. The result: a compact warehouse with up to 23,000 different parts and an overnight delivery.

In 2016, Swedish Agro Machinery took over the import of Claas products, a manufacturer of agricultural machinery, to Sweden and Norway. The new updated organizational structure needed a new facility to store spare parts efficiently. They chose to put it in Skåne Skurup, in the middle of one of Sweden's most fertile agricultural areas, also near Denmark and the center of the European continent. The challenge was, that they need to store parts in very different ways due to the various dimensions in the new warehouse. Swedish Agro already had realized some projects with SSI SCHAEFER in the past, so that is why they have been involved as a partner in the project since the very beginning.

Local presence is crucial for Swedish Agro. When an agricultural machine is on service, there should be no disruption, especially during the high season. That is why the company holds 25 workshops in the network with the extra focus on agricultural areas in Skåne, Västra Götaland, Östergötland and Uppland. Swedish Agro's commitment is to deliver the ordered spare parts for the next day if they are not in place locally.

Material flow supported by the new solution

The goods are delivered by trucks, unpacked at the work stations manually, sorted according to type and size and brought to different storage systems. Spare parts for agricultural machinery vary greatly in size, share and weight. It's everything from single bolts to input screws in the ten-meter class.

In fact, Swedish Agro needed ten different ways of storing. This includes long-span and cantilever racks for lying goods and compartments for storing standing moldings. This is very effective as some of the spare parts can be quite large. To utilize also the vertical space optimally, a narrow aisle has been set up with shelves. Smaller spare parts are stored in two SSI LOGIMAT Vertical Lift Modules, which accommodate around 16,000 items.

When goods are needed for an order, they are picked by a forklift or manually by an employee to be packed at the workstations for shipping. All orders received before 3.30 pm are delivered to the service workshops the following morning. This is possible thanks to dense logistics arrangements with overnight deliveries.

DS AUTOMOTION, dochteronderneming van de SSI SCHÄFER Group, is onderscheiden met de IFOY Award 2023 (International Intralogistics and Forklift Truck of the Year Award). In de categorie "Intralogistieke software" overtuigde de voertuigsoftware ARCOS de jury en won het van de concurrentie: Met ARCOS kunnen AGV- en AMR-vloten voor het eerst rijden met variabele zonegebaseerde vaste rijstrookgeleiding, rijstrookgeleiding met flexibele vermijding en met vrije navigatie met behulp van één voertuigsoftware. Deze efficiënte oplossing kan ook voertuigen van andere fabrikanten integreren via de VDA 5050 interface.

De IFOY Award bekroont de beste intralogistieke producten en systeemoplossingen van het betreffende jaar. SSI SCHÄFER introduceert een volautomatisch orderverzamelsysteem met talrijke innovatieve functies - de SSI Piece Picking-applicatie. Deze veelzijdige oplossing, inclusief speciale intelligente software, beschikt over geavanceerde functies zoals pick-and-place, objectherkenning met behulp van kunstmatige intelligentie (AI), een gepatenteerde grijppuntbepaling en extreem voorzichtige producthantering. De intelligente robotcel, die met andere SSI SCHÄFER componenten kan worden gecombineerd, werd van 25 tot 27 april in Stuttgart gepresenteerd op LogiMAT, de toonaangevende Europese vakbeurs voor intern transport.

Slimme pikrobots worden een vast onderdeel van de intralogistiek. Naast prestatieproblemen zijn andere belangrijke redenen de stijgende arbeidskosten en het tekort aan geschoold personeel. Bovendien willen bedrijven de arbeidsomstandigheden verbeteren en de werkdruk van werknemers verlagen. Deze benadering laat mensen en machines naast elkaar werken, waarbij robots steeds meer van de repetitieve, monotone taken op zich nemen. Dit levert aanzienlijk betere pickprestaties op, naast maximale nauwkeurigheid en beschikbaarheid. "In deze scenario's is het onze taak om onze gebundelde knowhow te benutten voor een continue verdere optimalisatie van onze automatiseringsoplossingen op basis van de marktvraag", zegt Peter Lambrecht, SVP Global Head of Sales, BU Logistics Solutions bij SSI SCHÄFER. "Vanuit het oogpunt van onze klanten zijn eenvoudige processen en ergonomie cruciaal, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd de efficiëntie willen verhogen."

Stuk voor stuk afgestemd op de volgende processtappen

SSI SCHÄFER biedt al een volledig geautomatiseerde, gerobotiseerde oplossing voor het picken van enkelstuks die zich in de praktijk heeft bewezen en ook voldoet aan de eisen voor een zero-defect tolerantie en end-to-end traceerbaarheid van goederen. Maar na een verder ontwikkelingsproces kan de SSI Piece Picking-cel nu veel meer. SSI Piece Picking is ontstaan uit een samenwerking met RO-BER, een bedrijf uit de SSI SCHÄFER Group, en is gebaseerd op de gebundelde knowhow van talrijke klantprojecten. Naast pick-and-drop wordt ook pick-and-place geïmplementeerd. Deze functie garandeert een voorzichtige handling omdat elk artikel zo dicht mogelijk bij de bodem van de bak of doos wordt geplaatst. Deze functie voorkomt productbeschadiging, terwijl de precieze plaatsing een optimaal gebruik van het vulniveau mogelijk maakt. In de nabije toekomst wordt er ook gewerkt aan een aansluiting op een bovenliggend transportsysteem. De plug-and-play oplossing, die de vorm heeft van een voorgemonteerde eenheid, kan worden gecombineerd met handmatige werkstations. Bovendien is de robotcel ideaal voor gebruik in combinatie met de energiezuinige transportsystemen en flexibele shuttle-technologie van SSI SCHÄFER. 

Inzet in alle branches

AI-gebaseerde objectdetectie plus state-of-the-art grijpertechnologie zorgen ervoor dat goederen veilig worden vastgepakt en voorzichtig in doelbakken of -dozen worden geplaatst. In plaats van vingervormige grijpers gebruikt SSI Piece Picking kleinere, compacte zuignappen die elke hoek van een bak/karton kunnen bereiken en zelfs de kleinste onderdelen snel en veilig vastpakken. Deze functie versnelt het totale picken en de snelheid kan zich tegelijkertijd aanpassen aan het specifieke product. Dankzij machine-leermethoden kunnen de robots ook ervaring opdoen met elke pick en hiervan leren, waardoor een kennisdatabase wordt gecreëerd die beschikbaar is voor alle andere robots. SSI Piece Picking is dus geschikt voor een breed scala aan goederen in de productie, e-commerce, detailhandel en in de farmaceutische en cosmetische industrie, maar ook voor externe logistieke dienstverleners (3PL). 100% productverificatie wordt bereikt door geïntegreerde scan- en weegfuncties. Tijdens het picken is de geïntegreerde AI al in staat om op basis van enkel wegen te detecteren of de juiste artikelen en gevraagde hoeveelheid zijn gepickt. Als er zich onverwachte gebeurtenissen voordoen, zoals een barcode die niet gescand kan worden, lost een automatische foutcorrectie het probleem op zonder menselijke tussenkomst.

Hoogste kwaliteitsnormen dankzij gepatenteerde technologie

Daarnaast verhoogt de optimalisatie van de leessnelheid die via barcodedetectie in de SSI Piece Picking-oplossing is geïmplementeerd de betrouwbaarheid van het proces. De pickpointoptimalisatie, waarvoor patent is aangevraagd, verschuift automatisch het grijppunt en zorgt ervoor dat barcodes tijdens het picken niet aan het zicht worden onttrokken, zodat ze onmiddellijk worden gescand. Zo kan het systeem, analoog aan de GS1-specificaties voor het plaatsen van codes, minstens 99,5% van de producten direct bij de eerste poging lezen. Dit verhoogt de picksnelheid en voldoet tegelijkertijd aan de richtlijnen voor leessnelheid van de sterk gereguleerde farmaceutische sector. Naast geavanceerde functies zoals pick-and-place en pickpointoptimalisatie, biedt SSI Piece Picking nog meer mogelijkheden. In de farmaceutische sector kan de systeemoplossing 80% van het productspectrum aan, inclusief goederen in kubus-, cilindrische, buis- en blisterverpakkingen.

AI Robotica als motor van de digitale transformatie

"Afhankelijk van de grootte, het gewicht en de opslagmethode kunnen we met onze oplossing tot 1.200 afzonderlijke stukken per uur picken", zegt Peter Lambrecht. "SSI Piece Picking combineert ultramoderne robottechnologie met slim machinaal leren in een intelligent totaalsysteem dat niet alleen is afgestemd op de uitdagingen van vandaag, maar ook op die van morgen. Met de nieuwe, geoptimaliseerde website van SSI SCHAEFER, een toonaangevende aanbieder van modulaire opslag- en logistieke oplossingen, kunnen gebruikers nu nog beter hun weg vinden en sneller de voor hen interessante informatie vinden.

Na een uitgebreide evaluatie presenteert de site zich nu in een modern design, met een verbeterde gebruiksvriendelijkheid en diverse mogelijkheden voor direct contact, evenals kortere laadtijden. De op maat gemaakte content over oplossingen en producten - van volledig geautomatiseerde magazijnen, service en onderhoud, robotica en automatisch geleide voertuigen tot werkstations, stellingen en containers - is geherstructureerd en in sommige gevallen bijgewerkt of nieuw toegevoegd. Het geeft gebruikers uitgebreide informatie via de productpagina's van de website, nieuws en blogartikelen met video's, best practices guides en white papers. In de vernieuwde sectie Trends & Inzichten kunnen de laatste gidsen met best practices en casestudies van klanten worden gedownload. Daarnaast is de belangrijkste en meest actuele informatie gebundeld in de nieuwe Newsroom.

Naast de inhoud van de website is er speciale aandacht besteed aan de navigatie, die nu intuïtief is gestructureerd en de gebruiker gemakkelijker laat werken. De complexiteit van de site is verminderd met een nieuwe frontend- en backendstructuur, waardoor de prestaties van de website op het hoogste niveau zijn gebracht.

De websites voor Duitsland, de VS, het VK, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland en Nederland zijn al live. De lancering van de nieuwe website in de andere landen is in volle gang.

In oktober 2020 kondigden Coop, een van de toonaangevende foodretailers in Zweden, en SSI SCHÄFER, wereldwijd marktleider op het gebied van modulaire opslag- en logistieke oplossingen, de start van hun langdurige samenwerking aan. SSI SCHÄFER had nogmaals een gesprek met Mats Tornard, projectmanager Strategic Supply Chain bij Coop, om het huidige succes van het lopende project Automated Logistics Centre te bespreken en samen te vatten. Eind 2021 deelden de twee bedrijven informatie over de soepele samenwerking, gedeelde waarden op het gebied van kwaliteit en duurzaamheid en de status van de installatie van de oplossing, die op dat moment net van start was gegaan. Het is tijd voor een update met de meest recente resultaten tot nu toe.

Ondanks alle uitdagingen en veranderingen is 2022 een bewogen jaar geweest voor een van de grootste automatiseringsprojecten in Europa. De wereldwijde crisis, problemen met de toeleveringsketen en een gebrek aan staal hebben de realisatie van Coop's oplossing niet kunnen tegenhouden. Alle belangrijke activiteiten volgen het schema zonder verstoringen of vertragingen. "We hebben tot nu toe een zeer positieve ervaring gehad met al onze partners. Ondanks het uitdagende jaar 2022 worden zowel het gebouw van de derde partij als de oplossing van SSI SCHÄFER volgens plan gerealiseerd", aldus Mats Tornard.

Constante verandering is de nieuwe stabiliteit

De afgelopen jaren waren lastig als het gaat om plannen voor de toekomst, omdat gedragsgewoonten aanzienlijk veranderden. Tijdens de realisatie van het project heeft Coop de invoergegevens bijgewerkt, geanalyseerd en geconcludeerd dat de volumes van de overdrachtsdatum de geplande volumes van 2027 zullen bereiken. Dit betekent dat zowel de groei van de industrie als die van het bedrijf de stoutste verwachtingen hebben overtroffen. Hoewel de volumetoename ongetwijfeld geweldig nieuws is, heeft dit ook gevolgen voor de herziening van oplossingen en wijzigingen in het ontwerp.

During the solution’s realization stage we reviewed the data and found out that Tijdens de realisatiefase van de oplossing hebben we de gegevens bekeken en kwamen we erachter dat Coop meer aandacht moet besteden aan palletiseren en depalletiseren om de toegenomen volumes in de toekomst te kunnen verwerken. We zijn blij met de oplossing van SSI SCHÄFER, omdat deze uitbreiding op elk moment mogelijk maakt, zelfs midden in de bouwfase. In de dynamische wereld van vandaag de dag is dit precies wat we nodig hebben.

Wat is er tot nu toe gedaan? Installatie van het systeem

Duurzaamheid en ergonomische werkomgevingen staan voorop in de gedeelde waarden van de twee bedrijven. Dit waren de kernpunten voor Coop in de ontwerpfase van de oplossing: een hoge efficiëntie bereiken zonder concessies te doen aan de belangrijke aspecten.

Goederen komen per spoor rechtstreeks naar het magazijn om de CO2-voetafdruk te minimaliseren en een milieuvriendelijke aanpak te handhaven. De goederenontvangstzone is uitgerust met het transportsysteem voor pallets, dat al klaar is en nu wordt getest. High-Bay magazijnen in zowel gekoelde als niet-gekoelde zones zijn geassembleerd en in gebruik genomen, samen met de palletkranen die dienen voor de opslag en het ophalen van goederen voor buffering.

Wanneer de goederen nodig zijn om de hoofdopslagruimte aan te vullen, komen ze aan bij het depalletiseerstation. Zowel het depalletiseren als het gemengde palletiseerstation zijn in uitvoering door extra uitbreiding van de oplossing tijdens de realisatie, d.w.z. meer robots. Wanneer de goederen in afzonderlijke kisten zijn verdeeld, worden ze via een transportband naar een opslagruimte getransporteerd. SSI SCHÄFER heeft zojuist een van de twee delen van het transportbaantransportsysteem voltooid.

De 3D-MATRIX Solution® van SSI SCHÄFER dient als buffer voor kisten. De opslaglocaties worden bediend door SSI Flexi shuttles, die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de opslag, het laden en het ophalen. De bufferopslag is ook uitgebreid en is momenteel een werk in uitvoering. Het enige onderdeel dat hier volledig voltooid is, is de installatie van de liften. Nadat de pallets nodig zijn voor de bestelling, vervoeren de SSI Flexi shuttles ze naar het palletiseerstation waar gerobotiseerde apparatuur de bestellingen samenstelt voor verzending.

Geassembleerde pallets worden afgeleverd bij de bufferopslag en worden geconsolideerd door de uiteindelijke klant of route. Een van de verzendbuffers bevindt zich in de laatste fase en is klaar om gelanceerd te worden.

Het grote automatiseringsproject is moeilijk te missen

2022 is een belangrijk jaar voor Coop en haar partners. Coop is bekroond met de gedeelde eerste plaats in de categorie Logistiek bedrijf van het jaar 2022! Coop's nieuwe goederenterminal in Kjula, Eskilstuna maakte indruk op de jury door de grote investering in treingebonden kruidenierslogistiek en het feit dat de terminal verregaand geautomatiseerd zal zijn. Het nieuwe magazijn van Coop is uitgerust met geautomatiseerde oplossingen van SSI SCHÄFER en helpt de retailer om 95% van alle pickprocessen geautomatiseerd uit te voeren. Bij het ontwerp van de nieuwe interne logistiek stonden ergonomische werkomgeving en duurzaamheid centraal. Coop, SSI SCHÄFER en andere bij het project betrokken partners bezochten de prijsuitreiking om diploma's en bloemen in ontvangst te nemen.

"Alle genomineerden presenteerden fantastische projecten. We waren erg blij met de grote en eerlijke concurrentie en waren vereerd dat we de prijs in ontvangst mochten nemen," zei Mats Tornard direct na de prijsuitreiking.

Het project viel ook op door de duurzame initiatieven van Coop voor zowel het dagelijkse werk als het nieuwe magazijn. Om de CO2-voetafdruk te minimaliseren, zal Coop ook zonnecellen op het dak plaatsen. De panelen produceren naar schatting ongeveer een derde van de energie die de fabriek jaarlijks nodig heeft. Rekening houdend met deze en andere groene activiteiten van het bedrijf besliste de jury ten gunste van Coop. Coop werd uitgeroepen tot het meest duurzame merk van Zweden in Europa's grootste merkonderzoek naar duurzaamheid - "Sustainable Brand Index 2021". Coop ontving een duurzaamheidscertificaat voor de nieuwe locatie met het niveau zilver. Dit betekent dat het nieuwe magazijn werd erkend voor zijn milieuvriendelijke bouw en gezonde en ergonomische werkomgeving voor de werknemers.

Coop en SSI SCHÄFER creëren meer banen

Elke dag worden er duizenden pakketten verwerkt, gevormd en naar de eindklant verzonden. Zo'n indrukwekkend gebouw met een volledig geautomatiseerde oplossing vereist gekwalificeerde mensen voor de bewaking en besturing. Om de optimale werking van het systeem te garanderen, is SSI SCHÄFER op zoek naar nieuwe leden voor hun team die geïnteresseerd zijn in loopbaanontwikkeling en in het leren over automatisering en robotica. "We zijn bijna twee jaar bezig en zijn blij te kunnen melden dat het nieuwe logistieke centrum op zoek is naar medewerkers en klaar is om nieuwe specialisten op te leiden en te laten groeien in het vak van de toekomst. In totaal zijn we op zoek naar 79 technici en professionals om soepele en non-stop operaties te ondersteunen," deelt Mats Tornard.

SSI SCHÄFER en Coop hebben behoefte aan gekwalificeerde medewerkers en de concurrentie om deze te krijgen is enorm. In plaats van compromissen te sluiten op het gebied van kwaliteit, werd besloten dat het tijd is om deel uit te maken van de veranderende omgeving. Daarom hebben de bedrijven samen met Yrkeshögskolan SKY, een van de grootste aanbieders van Advanced Vocational Education in Zweden, het initiatief genomen voor een onderwijsprogramma. Om nieuwe specialisten te onderwijzen, begeleiden en vormen.

Een van de grootste voordelen van het onderwijsprogramma is dat alle docenten praktijkervaring hebben. Ze werken dagelijks binnen de branche en zijn in staat om het meest recente nieuws, trends en technieken met de studenten te delen. Met de nodige drive, ambitie en succes tijdens het leerproces is het mogelijk om al voor het afstuderen een baan te vinden.

De afgestudeerden kunnen aan de slag als Automation Technicians in zowel Inventory Management als installatie en service van industriële robots, PLC Technicians, Robotics engineers en Onderhoudstechnici.

De lezers van het Duitse vaktijdschrift INDUSTRIAL Production hebben voor het eerst de producten van het jaar 2023 gekozen. In de categorie 'handling, montage en productie' overtuigde het semi-automatische werkstation Advanced Pick Station one-level van SSI SCHÄFER en veroverde de 2e plaats. Met dit systeem kunnen zware en breekbare voorwerpen ergonomisch worden verzameld. Tijdens de prijsuitreiking op 30 maart 2023 bij Weka Business Medien in Haar werden de winnaars bekendgemaakt.

Van december 2022 tot februari 2023 stemden de lezers van het tijdschrift INDUSTRIAL Production op hun favorieten en bepaalden welke innovaties de prestigieuze brancheprijs zouden ontvangen. In totaal werden 40 producten en oplossingen geselecteerd in zes categorieën. De bekroonde producten worden gekenmerkt door technische kenmerken, marktsucces in 2022 of het feit dat de oplossing de industrie in belangrijke mate heeft beïnvloed.

De winnaars werden op 30 maart 2023 bekendgemaakt tijdens de prijsuitreiking bij Weka Business Medien in Haar. SSI SCHÄFER breidt hiermee het minderheidsbelang dat het sinds 2018 in DS AUTOMOTION heeft, uit om het toenemende belang van autonome en mobiele robotica en de AGV-activiteiten in de intralogistiek te weerspiegelen. Het managementteam, geleid door Managing Directors Manfred Hummenberger en Wolfgang Hillinger, blijft aan. DS AUTOMOTION zal onafhankelijk blijven opereren met zijn gevestigde merk.

Neunkirchen/Siegerland (Germany), February 27, 2023 – The SSI SCHAEFER Group, a German family-owned company established more than 85 years ago and a leading international solution provider for all segments of the intralogistics industry, reported an order intake of EUR 1.74 billion (-12.2%) for the fiscal year 2022, according to preliminary figures. The decline is mainly due to the fact that major projects in the Group’s largest business unit, Logistics Solutions, were postponed to 2023 and 2024, as several customers recorded low order intake due to the economic impact of the war in Ukraine and increased material prices.

Sales revenues dropped by 5.1% to EUR 1.81 billion, partly due to delayed project acceptance caused by materials shortages. All other business units – Products & Equipment, Customer Services, Waste & Packaging – reported higher revenues than in the previous year.

Creation of an Innovation Eco-System and Progress in Expanding the Technology Leadership

A key focus in the fiscal year 2022 was placed on strengthening the SSI SCHAEFER Group’s innovation capability. The aim was to play a leading role in shaping the digital and sustainable transformation in order to achieve the goal of technology leadership in the intralogistics sector, as set out in the Group’s strategy. Neunkirchen/Hranice – SSI SCHAEFER has officially reopened its spare parts warehouse in Hranice, Czech Republic. The new location is located in close proximity to the facility for storage-retrieval machines and boasts significantly expanded production capacity with additional opportunities for growth. In addition to the comprehensive pallet spaces, the spare parts warehouse also has three SSI LOGIMAT lifts with ergonomic workstations for rapid processing of small parts orders.

Since 2014, the previous warehouse on the factory site of SSI SCHAEFER in Hranice has been supplying customers and service technicians with spare parts for automatic warehouses. The trend towards warehouse automation is causing business development to expand. As part of this trend, SSI SCHAEFER planned some adjustments in the storage-retrieval machine production facility. This required changes to the production flow in Hranice and a relocation of the spare parts warehouse. “Thanks to the excellent support from plant manager Robert Selzer and his team, it was possible to find a new location for the spare parts portfolio quickly. The tight time frame made successful implementation of this project a major challenge, but everyone involved helped us meet it successfully,” says Christian Puntigam, Global Head of Service Line Part Services at SSI SCHAEFER.

In an initial step, SSI SCHAEFER prepared half of the available space in an existing building for the new use. The capacity of the pallet rack warehouse was doubled, and SSI LOGIMAT lifts were integrated into the new layout for small parts storage, as well as a crane for handling heavy spare parts packages. The remaining space will be converted to meet the new requirements in the first quarter of 2023. Located a very short distance from the production facility, the new building minimizes the internal transport time for parts and also provides a very efficient goods delivery and collection process for external suppliers.

Rapid Delivery and High Availability Benefit Customer Service

Regional SSI SCHAEFER customers and employees can order all the spare parts conveniently from the SSI Webshop. Incoming orders are automatically forwarded to the warehouse via established IT interfaces, so the picking process can start immediately. In addition to automated order and warehouse processing, the new building also houses the following activities: incoming goods receipt and quality inspection, picking, pre-assembly, organizing transport and issuing customs documents. In the future, it will also be possible to carry out minor repair work at.

The spare parts warehouse portfolio will follow a so-called “highly dynamic warehouse management process,” with the clear objective of integrating highly critical, high-priority parts with dedicated flexible stock. The significant reduction in delivery times and high availability of the required spare parts will also increase customer satisfaction.

SSI LOGIMAT lifts store all the small parts for rapid ergonomic picking.

In just six months, SSI SCHAEFER was able to automate the existing mobile racking system at Ostendorf in Emstek using automated guided vehicles (AGV) and its WAMAS® intralogistics software. Right after the go-live in the middle of 2021, the positive impact of this partially automated logistics solution was clear and quantifiable: it ensures transparent, error-free processes and makes the material flow resource-independent – and thus more efficient – in three-shift operations. Achieving these objectives was an important step for this plastics specialist in order to meet its customers’ increasingly specific demands and strengthen its position on a highly competitive market.    

Gebr. Ostendorf Kunststoffe GmbH is one of the leading manufacturers of wastewater pipe systems in Germany and has sold these plastic pipes and polypropylene fittings since 1973. Its customers come from the construction industry, which generally orders large quantities of a wide range of variants and operates in a cost-intensive environment. Given its ongoing growth and the demand for shorter and shorter delivery times, Ostendorf had already commissioned a new distribution center at its headquarters in Vechta in 2017 for packaging-optimized overnight goods staging. SSI SCHAEFER equipped the center with an automatic channel storage system including SSI Orbiter® load handling devices, WAMAS® intralogistics software and a conveyor system.

The Path to Semi-Automation

At its Emstek site, Ostendorf also faced the challenge of adapting processes to increasingly demanding market conditions. It needed to optimize intralogistics, increase productivity and cut costs. At the same time, Ostendorf entered into an agreement with a major construction industry customer for pre-picking goods onto mixed pallets. That meant that suddenly, there were more packaging materials and pallets that had to be kept on hand and moved around the warehouse. However, it is not easy to recruit qualified staff for the additional work involved, as well as for three-shift operations – especially in the Oldenburg Münsterland region, which enjoys nearly full employment. Therefore, Ostendorf chose a partially automated plug-and-play solution from SSI SCHAEFER that could be installed quickly and is ideal specifically for smaller warehouses with moderate throughput rates. The new solution, combining automated guided vehicles (AGV) with the existing mobile racking system (MRS), handles the storage and retrieval processes and internal transport reliably, offering Ostendorf the advantage of high process reliability around the clock.

Ostendorf chose SSI SCHAEFER because it wanted a single partner that could serve as the general contractor for the whole solution, including all the interfaces. This made communication much easier and ensured a time-optimized project schedule. Furthermore, the two companies already had good experience collaborating on other projects, such as the high bay warehouse in Vechta and the mobile pallet racking system in Rain am Lech, in which SSI SCHAEFER proved a reliable expert partner. Last but not least, Ostendorf was already familiar with the WAMAS® intralogistics software from the Vechta site and had had good experiences with it.

“For Emstek, relying on full automation, as was done at Vechta, would have been wishful thinking and excessive,” reports Ludger Stroot, operations manager for Emstek at Ostendorf. “But we still wanted to introduce a certain degree of automation to get the benefits that come with it. In this context, the automated guided vehicles were the appropriate technology and were just right for our comparatively low throughput.” “In addition, time was tight,” adds Lukas Varelmann, head of in-house logistics at Ostendorf. “While the planning and implementation of a fully automated high bay warehouse, including the building permit, takes at least three years, we were able to achieve our objectives in less than six months thanks to partial automation.”

A Practical Combination of an MRS, AGVs and Software

This extremely manageable timeframe highlights the particular advantages of the scalable logistics solution that was introduced here: “The combination of a mobile racking system with automated guided vehicles is a mature standard and can be directly integrated into the customer’s warehouse structures,” explains Stefan Reichwald, sales manager at SSI SCHAEFER. “The automated pallet handling solution immediately has positive effects on delivery reliability and quality, as well as ongoing operating costs.”

SSI SCHAEFER successfully completed this partial automation project together with AGV specialist DS Automotion, an SSI SCHAEFER Group company, in the middle of 2021. In the process, the partners set up an interface to the existing mobile racking system. At the same time, they were responsible for the integration of the AGVs and conveyor system and for the overall integration into Ostendorf’s WAMAS® software environment. “This was a comprehensive solution package, including software, so the decision to implement it in this form was an easy one,” emphasizes Lukas Varelmann.

Improved Workflow and Continuous Material Flow in 24/7 Operation

“The AGVs ensure a constant material flow in three-shift operation at Ostendorf; the processes are clearly structured, and this approach virtually eliminates defects,” explains Roland Hieslmair, sales engineer at DS Automotion. This reduces the workload of employees, whose current responsibilities include cross-process activities in the control center. All the processes are also clearly traceable via WAMAS®. Furthermore, the secure, reliable communication between the MRS and AGVs eliminates waiting times; as a vehicle approaches its destination aisle, the system opens the aisle already. The software communicates with the mobile racking system via ProfiNet with barcode support. “WAMAS® sends the orders to DS Automotion’s fleet controller, which you can think of as a kind of ‘dispatcher’”, explains Roland Hieslmair. The system simultaneously checks which vehicle is free and issues the transport command. For a retrieval order, WAMAS® makes sure the aisle opens promptly so the AGV can drive right in, pick up the requested pallet and move it to the transfer point on the conveyor system. The fleet controller notifies WAMAS® that the order is complete, and the AGV is now ready for its next task.

Initial scenarios are also being considered for construction of an automated small parts warehouse in Vechta. SSI SCHAEFER offers the system solution together with a warehouse control system (WCS), which handles the coordination of transport orders. In addition to the channel shuttles, a fleet controller is coupled to this system to control the AGV network, with optional fleet management for manually operated ground conveyors. For example, in the storage process, transport orders are first generated via the host, which sends the orders to the WCS. When the transport order is transferred to the fleet control system, resources are automatically aligned with priorities. The transport order is then assigned to a vehicle according to the retrieval strategy, prioritization, sequencing or bundling rules and the AGV availability. The AGV picks up the loading unit and transports it to the storage cube. The specially tailored WCS ensures that the assigned destination rack is already equipped with a channel shuttle to eliminate waiting time. Once the transport order is completed, feedback is simultaneously sent to the host, and the vehicle is now available for its next deployment.

“Using the WCS we offer gives operators even greater flexibility,” adds Johan Kagerö. “The software offers options such as applying FIFO/FILO (‘first in, first out’ / ‘first in, last out’) handling principles, performing sequencing and using KPIs for further performance optimization.” Interface compatibility with all common customer systems and their interface technologies also guarantees flexibility. With this foundation, integrating a WCS-supported combination of SSI Orbiters and AGVs is possible not only in greenfield environments with a high degree of design freedom – integration even into existing (brownfield) structures poses no difficulty. SSI SCHAEFER’s powerful intralogistics solution seamlessly connects the existing system with the new one. It ensures process efficiency and optimizes order processing in the respective distribution channels – wholesale, e-commerce and retail. The warehouse capacity has also been expanded to accommodate the steady growth in the e-commerce business. The fully scalable installed intralogistics solution includes an SSI Cuby shuttle system, a compact carton and bin conveyor system, various handling systems and sequence towers.

The “Carhartt WIP” premium streetwear brand is known for casual, timeless styles and durable quality. The company behind the label is Work in Progress Textilhandels GmbH, which manufactures and distributes Carhartt products outside the USA. The new reality of e-commerce-driven shopping presents even a successful fashion supplier like Carhartt WIP with the challenge of ensuring efficient processing of online orders and maximum availability of merchandise as the product range grows. The process needs to manage daily and seasonal peaks flexibly and quickly process returns. With “Shop-Friendly-Delivery”, merchandise must be supplied reliably and quickly to the brick-and-mortar retailers. They receive the goods from Carhartt WIP pre-sorted and optimized for the specific store.

Linking New and Existing Structures Intelligently

Carhartt WIP supplies its own stores and outlets worldwide (B2B); at the same time, orders are also increasing from end customers (B2C) through its own online store and other digital platforms. As a result, Carhartt WIP experienced a shortage of warehouse capacity. Carhartt WIP needed a solution to minimize the rising complexity of omnichannel management. In addition, integrating the dynamically growing e-commerce part of the B2C segment into processes without fundamentally modifying tried-and-tested B2B business procedures was a major challenge. This challenge had to be met on the software side; however, from a technical point of view, it also meant seamlessly connecting the existing system to a new, expanded intralogistics system in such a way as to allow continued use of existing systems. Furthermore, given Carhartt WIP’s expected growth figures, it was essential, even at this stage, for SSI SCHAEFER to plan for optional expansion scenarios in order to allow their seamless implementation in the future during ongoing operations.

Reliable, Proven Collaboration

A logistics project in Weil am Rhein first brought Carhartt WIP and SSI SCHAEFER together many years ago. In that project, the intralogistics specialist optimized and automated the processes in the first logistics facility, with a focus on the automated small parts warehouse (ASPW). “We commit to SSI SCHAEFER based on a long-standing collaboration with trust and a high degree of reliability,” says Wolfgang Heldt, Head of Logistics at Carhartt WIP. Given the increasing success of e-commerce, the expansion of the logistics center was the next logical step: “Customers expect a certain level of service, and online vendors need to maintain that level 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Furthermore, for Carhartt WIP, this performance must reflect our premium brand’s reputation,” emphasizes Wolfgang Heldt. In particular, the expansion project focused on maximum flexibility and efficiency, modularity, and built-in buffers for future growth. These features are essential for an adequate response to current and future challenges – from a business perspective as well.

Perfectly Coupled Service Modules for Greater Efficiency

In the extension building with around 4,000 m² of floor space, SSI SCHAEFER installed a fully automated, space-optimized shuttle storage system in which 110 SSI Cuby single-level shuttles handle storage and retrieval. Around 35,000 container and carton storage locations with double-deep storage, distributed over five aisles, were created. “The SSI Cuby shuttle system is very powerful – the performance we get, 22 shuttles per aisle, is remarkable and has led to a reduction in order throughput times,” says Wolfgang Heldt, adding: “The shuttle storage system allows us to efficiently meet the needs of the B2C business, where low order quantities are the norm.” Depending on the order structure, Carhartt WIP can now handle up to 100,000 picks in one day. Lifts, which ensure high throughput, as well as the infeed and take-away conveyor systems, including a high-speed loop, are connected to the shuttle storage system. The ten sequence towers, each with 2 × 22 transfer locations, serve to sequence the source cartons and continuously supply the ten picking stations, which are equipped with put-to-light displays. “These towers efficiently buffer and sequence cartons retrieved from the shuttle storage system to ensure that they’re always fed to the picking stations in the correct sequence,” explains Johannes Zach, Vice President Market Sector Fashion at SSI SCHAEFER. “This increases process reliability while boosting performance.”

The workstations in the different areas, such as incoming goods, order picking, new incoming returns and packaging, are connected through the conveyor system. In addition, the eight new B2C packaging workstations and the six special handling workstations for value-added services, such as prepricing and customer-specific carton or pallet loading, are also integrated. These processes are supported by various handling systems, e.g., automatic carton openers and erectors, scanners, automatic sealing machines and label applicators. The conveyor system also connects the eight-aisle ASPW, to which SSI SCHAEFER has added two further aisles. This made it possible to create completely new material flow structures and link them to the processes in the B2B area, which were mostly retained, in order to efficiently handle the seven defined order scenarios. These result from the different composition of the items, which can come from up to three warehouse areas: the existing ASPW, the block storage for non-conveyable items and the new shuttle storage system. “Due to the complexity of the system elements and processes, we divided the commissioning in two phases,” adds Udo Peintner, project manager at SSI SCHAEFER. “Phase one, which was completed in January 2020, involved the ASPW expansion and retrofitting the existing system, incoming goods and switching the existing software to WAMAS®. This was followed in September 2020 by the go-live of the SSI Cuby system, the sequence tower and the connection of the existing system to the new shuttle storage system through the conveyor system.” As a result, the overall system was able to deliver the required performance in time for “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” – promotional discount events popular with consumers.

During project implementation, SSI SCHAEFER delivered the individual pieces, such as steel construction, the conveyor system, the shuttle system, and software as a complete package. This was an advantage since the reduction in the interfaces involved benefited Carhartt WIP through time-optimized project execution.

Every year, Black Friday heralds the global peak season in retailing. However, the days of this sales campaign, with lots of discounts, being limited to only the Friday after Thanksgiving, and even to selected products or product groups, are very much over. More and more frequently, vendors are expanding their sales tactics and discount battles over an entire Black Week and seamlessly transitioning into the hot final phase of Christmas trade with Cyber Monday and other offers.

How will buying behavior fare in challenging times?

This year, many retailers are relying on more inventory. They have ordered early to have enough stock, unlike last year. In the USA and Asia in particular, the industry traditionally expects increased consumer demand at Christmas time. In Europe, consumer sentiment has been dampened to some extent due to the rise in energy and living costs, high inflation and general uncertainty surrounding the war in Ukraine. With the discount battle of Black Friday, the industry nevertheless expects increased demand, which needs to be managed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Efficient intralogistics for standard and peak times

In order picking and shipping, seasonal peaks could previously be realized by reorganizing the warehouse to set up fast-moving pick zones and by increasing staff. The latter in particular is becoming increasingly difficult. However, the extension of discount campaigns to large parts of the existing range or additional seasonally purchased goods also increases the complexity and dynamics in the warehouse. E-Grocery - omnichannel logistics solution for grocer Lotus's in Thailand

A best practice example from the growing global e-commerce grocery segment is Lotus's, a hypermarket operating in Thailand with over 2,000 stores, 15 million customers, and an online platform. In order to respond to growing demand and omnichannel consumer behavior, the grocer implemented an innovative material flow concept with partial automation at its largest unit load distribution center, in WangNoi, together with SSI SCHAEFER. The main objective of the project was to develop a more cost-efficient solution for unit load storage and single item picking on the existing floor space, in order to increase labor productivity and handle orders more efficiently. The solution included a multi-level manual picking system with carton flow racks for storing fast-moving items and carton and bin conveyor technology connecting all picking zones and workstations. In addition to retrofitting the warehouse's hardware, all processes within the existing Oracle WMS environment were integrated into WAMAS via an IT interface, without re-engineering for a completely new WMS. The result is a flexible logistics solution from order start to picking and shipping sortation.

Electrical engineering supplier Fust invests in omnichannel solution

To prepare for its growing e-commerce business, Swiss Coop subsidiary Dipl.-Ing. Fust AG, the largest supplier of household electrical appliances, consumer electronics and computers in Switzerland, has invested in modernizing and expanding its logistics site in Oberbüren, Switzerland. The goal was to centralize the warehouse capacities as well as to align the logistics concept, which was previously focused on store deliveries, with the changed requirements in both the B2B and B2C business. Together with SSI SCHAEFER, the company has implemented a highly efficient and extremely flexible multi-channel solution, which has already proven itself in the Corona pandemic with the rapid increase in online orders, with high process and fail-safe reliability.

Over a construction period of only two years, the logistics floor space was doubled to 50,000 m²; at the same time, the required storage capacities have been tripled. The scalable solution mix consists of a bin warehouse with the SSI Cuby single-level shuttle system, a high-bay warehouse, solutions for manual areas, and the WAMAS logistics software including a Warehouse Control System to control all automated warehouse resources in a sequenced and synchronized manner. Whereas previously about 1,800 shipping packages could be produced per day for store deliveries and the online business combined, Fust is now able to send a total of 4,000 shipments per day for both sales channels.

Department store retailer Stockmann successfully handles sales campaigns online and offline thanks to high-availability logistics.

Since 2016, Finnish retailer Stockmann has been handling all deliveries to stores and e-commerce customers from a highly automated logistics center in the greater Helsinki area. The assortment includes hanging goods, lay-flat goods, and other items, all of which are stored in the automated, multifunctional distribution center. The system developed by SSI SCHAEFER is designed for a throughput of 55,000 order items with 180,000 individual parts per day. While all the hanging goods are transported and sorted via the energy-efficient overhead conveyor system, SSI SCHAEFER implemented the 3D-MATRIX Solution for the flexible handling of the flat goods. This is an 8-level shuttle warehouse with 130,500 storage locations for double-deep storage and 45 lifts for parallel storage and retrieval of bins. The connected order picking zone for hanging garments accommodates 9 picking workstations. The hanging garment picking area is arranged on 3 levels and accommodates over 350,000 garments.

The entire solution was designed with potential expansion in mind. This means that the layout of the warehouse is capable of integrating additional parts to the system for both hanging garments and flat garments, if required, to accommodate the company's growth and possible future changes. Furthermore, Stockmann relies on SSI SCHAEFER's comprehensive maintenance service "SCHAEFER Maintenance Philosophy (SMP)", which supports both seasonal sales peaks and the handling of daily standard quantities. With automation, IMDAD can move up to 600 shipping bins containing more than 10,000 order lines per hour of operation. The report was prepared on the basis of the internationally recognized standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The company thus implements its 2023 SSI Strategy Roadmap, which defines sustainability as one of six focus topics.

Sustainability has two dimensions for SSI SCHAEFER, i.e. responsible operation along its own value chain and promoting the sustainability of its customers by offering them innovative and future-proof technologies.

“Our first Sustainability Report is intended to give our stakeholders an insight into the sustainable initiatives, projects and solutions we are pursuing already today, our major challenges in the relevant action areas in the coming years, and how we plan to master them,” says Steffen Bersch, CEO of the SSI SCHAEFER Group. “As the backbone of the globally growing e-commerce industry, we can help our customers make their material flow even more efficient and sustainable by offering them intelligent intralogistics solutions.”

The report covers the entire basis of consolidation and, as a first step, records the performance indicators of the 18 largest entities, which represent more than 80% of revenues.

Specific goals defined with regard to a value-oriented corporate culture include, for instance, the development of a strategic EHS (environment, health and safety) management system or the definition of global KPIs for the Group’s safety performance. A strategic goal in the field of product development is to reduce the share of pneumatic products of selected product ranges, which are not very energy-efficient, to 5%. With regard to the value chain, SSI SCHAEFER wants to base its supplier management much more strongly on sustainability criteria; by 2023, at least 50% of the top 100 suppliers are to be subjected to sustainability audits.

As far as the Group’s carbon footprint is concerned, the calculation for the 18 largest entities is underway (Scope 1 & 2), with the aim of publishing a carbon/climate strategy for the SSI SCHAEFER Group by the end of 2022.

To implement the topics in the Group, SSI SCHAEFER has installed a Global Sustainability Council (GSC) led by Heiko Stötzel, Head of Group Social Responsibility & HSE, which coordinates control and target tracking across business units, regions and Group functions.

All vehicles use Bluetooth to communicate with each other. A complex IT landscape is thus not necessary. During this festive ceremony, the audience had a chance to get acquainted with the in-house equipment exhibition and SSI SCHAEFER’s remarkable history facts. The purpose of the experience centre is to enable customers of small and medium-sized enterprises to see, evaluate and even try out SSI SCHAEFER’s products. The test room features smart and conventional storage solutions: PR 600 for pallet storage, R 3000 shelving for cartons and totes and cantilever racking for long or heavy goods. The exhibition also included SSI LOGIMAT® Vertical Lift Module and Automated Guided Vehicle WEASEL®.

SSI SCHAEFER Benelux also thanks the strategic partners who were able to attend the opening.
